ACDSee Pro 2
Powerful all-in-one image-management/editing software for windows

"ACDSee Pro 2 is the latest upgrade to ACD Systems' popular workflow-management software. Besides making it easy to download, organize, archive and locate your images. ACDSee Pro 2 provides powerful editing and RAW-processing capabilities. One-click Visual Tagging and extensive batch processing greatly speed up and simplify workflow.

Use ACDSee Pro 2 to download images from digital cameras, scanners, card readers and removable drives to your computer, then display them as thumbnails, resize them and sort them however you wish. Just double-click an image to view it at full resolution. With ACDSee Pro 2, RAW images display as quickly as JPEGs.

ACDSee Pro 2 can handle more than 100 file formats, including JPEG, TIFF, GIF and PSD. It can handle RAW formats from nearly all digital SLRs and many compact digital cameras that provide RAW recording (a list of compatible cameras is available on the ACDSee website).

In the Edit Mode (Modify > Edit Mode), you can adjust exposure, color and sharpness, reduce noise, resize, rotate and crop, apply more than 40 special effects, fix red-eye and other image flaws, watermark, add text, and correct perspective and lens distortion. A three-tab Shadows/Highlights feature is particularly effective. The Basics tab provides easy adjustment via two sliders. The Light EQ tab lets you adjust 10 different tonal ranges via sliders, a la a sound equalizer, while the Advanced tab lets you adjust curves via four sliders or by clicking and dragging in the graph or the image itself. Click the question mark in any adjustment screen to call up a help screen that clearly explains the feature.

Organizational features include the ability to use categories, keywords, favorites rating and metadata. The Properties pane (View > Properties) lets you view, add and edit EXIF and IPTC metadata. A Quick Search bar makes global searches quick and easy, while the Search pane lets you search for specifics such as ISO, focal length, keyword and image type.

The Create Slide Show wizard (Create > Create Slide Show File) makes it easy to create a slideshow, with a variety of transitions and audio, and save it to a CD. It's equally easy to create screensavers, archives of images and copyrighted HTML image galleries for web viewing. Thumbnail previews of images are retained in a virtual Photo Disc, so you can browse and search images that are no longer on your computer's hard drive, even when the CD containing the files isn't in the drive.

When it's time for printing, a color-management wizard helps you print images accurately with full color-management support for ICC and ICM color profiles.

ACDSee Pro 2 is Windows-only. Estimated Street Price is $129 ($90 for current owners of ACDSee products). You can download a free 30-day trial from the website."

Organizing Digital Photos

“ACDSee 10 Photo Manager. Using Photo Manager’s PhotoDisc feature, Kim can organize photos on CDs, DVDs and other external storage devices the same way she organizes photo on her computer. PhotoDisc creates low-resolution copies of the photos Kim has stored on external storage devices, allowing her to put these thumbnail photos into categories and add keywords right from her computer. When she needs to edit or print a photo, Photo Manager tells her where to find the original. This feature makes it easy for Kim the use older pictures and photos from friends on the layouts.

Kim likes Photo Manager because…

It shows her Windows Explorer file tree on the left-hand side of the screen, allowing her to quickly select and import folders containing photos. It allows her to create categories and subcategories, where she can sort the same photo in multiple ways. It lets her assign multiword keywords to her photos, making it easy to find photos of specific people, places, and events that don't have their own categories. It includes simple one-click fixes for red-eye, color cast, and exposure, plus more advanced editing tools for things like curves. It reminds her quarterly to back up her photos, which she can do from inside the program.

Expanding Options for Tracking Images

“For customers that need somewhat greater functionality, ACDSee, from ACD Systems, is a good choice. Of the asset management solutions the company currently has available, ACDSee 9 Photo Manager provides a good combination of power and ease of use. While not as sophisticated as the company's Pro Photo Manager, photographers just starting out with organizing images will get up and running quickly, while longtime photographers won't quickly exhaust its capabilities. Photo Manager is easy to use: that's a good selling point for anyone who wants to avoid a steep learning curve. Installation requires no special knowledge. Another good selling point is the application's built-in image editor, which includes a selection of basic image optimization tools, such as being able to automatically optimize (batch process) multiple photos, a handy feature for anyone who doesn't want to spend more time in front of the computer than behind the camera. ACDSee 9 Photo Manager runs on Windows-based computers and has a list price of $39-95”.

10 Top Imaging Applications
Our favorite software for photographers, from beginners to pros

“What started primarily as a photo organization and management application has grown into a powerful editor, too, with excellent nondestructive RAW file processing, image comparison and enhancement tools, and all of the fast viewing and organization features for which ACDSee is well known.

You’ll find Curves and Levels, color controls, independent shadow and highlight adjustments, and a new Photo Repair tool with both cloning and healing modes to fix random noise, blemishes or dust. In healing mode, the software removes blemishes while analyzing local pixels to maintain the surrounding color, luminance and texture.

The latest version also features a new noise-reduction mode, which identifies noise pixels and adjusts their values based on neighboring pixels, making it particularly well-suited for removing noise caused by shooting digital cameras at higher ISO equivalents or during long exposures. You’ll also find lens correction tools to remove the perspective distortions caused when you shoot with wide-angle lenses.

In addition to photo-editing tools, ACDSee Pro also offers sharing features, like the ability to create Flash or PDF slideshows, complete with transitions and playback controls. Plus, you can create HTML galleries to post to your Website.”
